Volunteerism lies at the heart of ECV’s philosophy, supporting vulnerable adults and seniors in leading purposeful lives filled with joy and belonging. It addresses a critical social gap by offering personal support and companionship, particularly for those living in isolation and experiencing loneliness.
In today’s ageing society, the growing need for volunteer work is widely recognized. It is considered “integral to the delivery of important services” (Hughes, 2006, p. 7), spanning healthcare, community, and many other sectors. Australia, for example, has developed “an extensive range of volunteering activities” such that “a significant portion of the population are volunteers” (Hughes, 2006, p. 8). In Singapore, SG Cares was established as a national initiative “championed by the SG Cares Office and co-led by the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre and the National Council of Social Service, to build a more caring and inclusive home for all” (MCCY, 2026).
Volunteerism also contributes to the growth of social capital. Its benefits are mutual, enriching both volunteers and the beneficiaries of their efforts. For instance, it has been shown to be “an effective approach to improving the mental well-being of older adults” (Shorey et al., 2025). Other benefits include fostering active community engagement, building new friendships and fraternal bonds, and providing a renewed sense of purpose in life.
