This initiative seeks to establish a voluntary registry system that enables individuals to reconnect with long-lost relatives and friends. It is particularly relevant to seniors living alone, including those at the end-of-life stage. With Singapore’s ageing population, the number of seniors living alone has become a growing concern. In 2024, the Singapore Department of Statistics reported 87,200 seniors aged 65 and above living alone—more than double the figure recorded in 2014.[1]
Many of these seniors have lived in isolation for years, estranged from their families and close friends due to divorce, personality differences, major conflicts, or painful family incidents. In their later years, beyond financial sufficiency and material provision, what they long for most are opportunities to reconcile and reconnect with loved ones. For instance, some seniors have been alienated from their children for decades and no longer know their whereabouts. Their final wish in life is simply to see their estranged children before passing on.
This longing is not limited to seniors. Children who were separated from their parents—whether father, mother, or both—often carry the same desire. In adulthood, many yearn to reconnect with their long-lost parents and to rebuild bonds that were severed in earlier years.
A central registry system for reconnection would give lonely seniors renewed meaning and purpose. While we may not be able to improve their physical or medical condition due to age, we can offer them the joy and beauty of reconciliation. This approach is not only therapeutic—it is transformative and mutually enriching, both for the seniors and for the relatives and friends who reconnect with them. It addresses a critical gap currently missing in the spectrum of healthy ageing programmes and initiatives in our community.
